ELLE DECORATION #29, 2018
New names of Russian architecture and design that are worth remembering.
Who are you?
We founded our studio in 2012 in Moscow and engaged in projects of various scale— from small exhibitions to the master plan concepts of a residential block. Lately we have been taking a selective approach with regards to projects. It’s important for us that our understanding of harmony is aligned with the client’s will and desire. It is this fit that generates the energy essential to create Architecture.
What’s already been accomplished?
We are currently in the final stages of completing a private residence that we have been working on for five years. We have designed everything, from the general plot plan right down to the furniture. Only this approach, in our opinion, allows us to achieve Harmony.
Your most significant victory?
Being awarded the first prize in the international competition for the redevelopment project of palazzo Ca' Tron in Venice. It’s quite significant for us because more than 600 projects had been submitted from 28 countries.
Which western architects have influenced you the most?
It’s an incredibly difficult choice to make, but let’s say that today, it’s Andrea Palladio, Louis Kahn, and Peter Zumthor.
What are you currently working on?
We are working on private houses in Russia, Belgium and England.
Your dream project?
It would be interesting to design a cemetery. Seriously. It’s a meditative, contemplative space and a very topical theme. The genre of tomb design has fallen into a state of absolute decline even though it is, by and large, where big architecture takes its roots. Just think of the famous Renaissance tombs, or the more recent Brion Cemetery near Treviso, designed by Carlo Scarpa in the 1960s. These projects were the most avant-garde of their time!
Who do you see yourselves as in 10 years?
As architects.
